Family meals are an easy way to create a lasting connection, and I’m always trying to find the right balance between a busy week day and family dinners. Try as I might, and as much as it pains me to admit, family dinners are elements of our week that don’t always come easy. They are planned for but never happen as much as I would like, so when the weekend rolls around, my biggest priority is a big family breakfast that allows us to linger around the table and reconnect.
So much is written about the importance of family dinners that we are all aware of the value they have in lowering rates of obesity and creating healthy eating habits in children. But with so much emphasis quick ‘on the go’ breakfast solutions, the family breakfast is often overlooked. But not in our home; breakfast is golden, and is a family ritual that is never pushed aside.
5 tips to make family breakfasts your new routine
1. Plan Ahead. Include breakfast in your weekly meal plan & stock your pantry with basics like a selection of your favorite jams and premium quality breads like Cobblestone Bread Co.’s new selection of bagels and English muffins.
2. Keep it simple. A good old fashioned fry up is great, but if you’ve got a busy day planned, focus on a menu with easy to prepare recipes that are not only simple to cook, but cut out all the fuss of a heavy clean up. Breakfast can account for up to a third of your daily nutrition intake, something as simple as a few bagels, soft boiled eggs and fruit gives you everything you need to keep you fueled until lunchtime.
3. Get everyone involved. From setting the table to cooking the meal, making it a family activity drives home the value of family time and healthy eating.
4. Linger. Allow at least an hour for a family breakfast and avoid the temptation to over-plan your weekend morning. Taking the time to just sit and enjoy the moment is one of the best parts about a family breakfast.
5. Create a conversation topic. In our house, ask “Best Part/Worst Part”. This simple table topic allows us all to connect and share our stories of the past week. And without fail, someone always brings up a knock-knock joke.
