As I write this, I can hear the occasional drop of the apples from the orchard beside my office and my legs are have only just turned that soft pale shade of tan that does not blind you when I wear shorts….where has the summer gone, and how is that Fall is quietly making itself known? I had great plans to spend weeks making compote, tomato sauces and any number of summer delights only to find that the end of summer is upon me and my weeks have now turned to hours.
This weekend I joined the FoodSaver team at the University District Farmers Market for a #SaveThe Season event, and the timing could not have been more appropriate given my end of summer scramble. One of the joys of walking a market with an empty shopping bag is that by the end of the day, it is full of every imaginable summer delight, add to that the FoodSaver and I had a summer to Fall menu in the making. I met so many amazing farmers, cheese mongers and butchers that I left with grand ideas of packing it all in to become a farmer…and then reality sent in (the early hours, dirt and comfortable shoes are simply not my style, regardless of how well one can eat).
My summer to Fall menu is a seasonal feast of gorgeous tomatoes, hand crafted sausages, fresh lemon pasta and a variety of beats that make me weak in the knees. The fresh ingredients are now sealed and packed away in my freezer, and later this Fall I will be sharing my recipe for a Summer to Fall feast that I have vacuum sealed with my FoodSaver.
Of course, I did not save everything for the Fall. I sealed bags upon bags of cheeses, breads, and herbs that I picked up on my day at the market, and packed my fridge with so many mouthwatering and visually stunning goodies that I can tuck into over the next few weeks….my kitchen will be summery all September long and I cannot wait!
